Our Story

Straits Bakery was born from a dream to create a space for friends and family to gather, against the backdrop of great food.

With the founders being from Penang and Malacca, and then setting up their home in Singapore – Straits Chinese Peranakan cuisine was an obvious choice when it came to deciding on the type of food to serve.

We celebrate the comfort of home at Straits Bakery.

Every dish at in our restaurant pays tribute to what we hold dear and familiar: The plethora of fragrances and tastes that come together in mainstays such as Ayam Buah Keluak, Babi Pongteh and Otak-Otak, are those that fill our home; and the living heritage of old friends, new friends, and family that are welcomed through our doors.

We believe that honest-to-goodness food can only be authentically made with the freshest herbs and spices. This is why our sauces are made from scratch, with nothing pre-packaged. In the same vein, our unique cakes and cookies that carry the region’s signature are also made on-site, so that it is always freshness guaranteed.

We cannot wait to welcome you – for you to experience our hospitality, and to enjoy the same love we have for the flavours of the Straits.

Our LOGO

Our logo is a hand-drawn Blue Pea Flower, also known as Bunga Telang or Butterfly Pea Flower, and a number of other names. It is a vine known for its bright blue flowers native to Southeast Asia. Being hand-drawn symbolises that everything we serve in the restaurant is made by hand – no shortcuts, no cutting of corners – to bring our customers the best.

The Blue Pea Flower features strongly in Peranakan cuisine for generations upon generations, and is used as a natural colourant for a range of foods such as rice, cakes, kueh, jellies, and drinks. Likewise, we hope to preserve and carry on the tradition of Peranakan cuisine for generations to enjoy.

Aptly, the flower is chosen as a symbol for Straits Bakery as it is the one ingredient that binds all Peranakan cuisine together, like a vine of love that binds generations of families together.
